Why is Creation Care a Core Part of Faith?
Should we really be taking action in helping with the Climate and Nature Emergency? How important is it really? If we walk with the Lord, we are called to help take care of His Creation:
1. God Created the Earth—and Called It Good
In Genesis, God created the world and declared it “very good” (Genesis 1:31). The earth is not disposable—it’s God’s handiwork, entrusted to us not to exploit, but to cherish and care for.
2. We Are Stewards, Not Owners
God placed humanity in the garden “to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). This stewardship means we are responsible caretakers, called to preserve creation for future generations and all living things.
3. Love of Neighbour Includes Environmental Justice
The effects of environmental degradation—climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss—hit the world’s most vulnerable the hardest. Loving our neighbours (Mark 12:31) includes advocating for clean air, safe water, and a healthy planet for everyone.
4. Creation Praises God—and We’re Part of It
Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” Creation itself is part of worship. When we care for it, we protect the beauty and testimony of God’s world.
5. Following Jesus Means Living Responsibly
Jesus lived simply and showed compassion to all. As His followers, we’re called to live in a way that reflects His values—which includes humility, justice, and reverence for life.
6. Hope and Renewal Are Central to the Gospel
Christian hope is not just about heaven—it’s about God’s plan to restore all things (Revelation 21:5). When we act to heal the planet, we participate in that redemptive work.
